레어 어스(Rare Earth)는 처음은 선라이너즈(The Sunliners)로 시작해 67년 다시 재결성된 '레어 어스'는 블루 아이드 소울 (Blue eyed soul) 에 기반을 둔 리듬 앤 블루스 하드락을 구사해 당시의 락 기류에 놀라움을 던져 주었다.  색스폰 연주 및 보컬 질 브리지스(Gil Bridges), 드러머 피트 리베라(Pete Rivera), 베이스 기타로 존 퍼시 (John Parrish)의 레어 어스는 백인적인 하드록이 아닌 소울과 펑크가 뒤범벅이 된 흑인적인 사운드의 새로운 방식을 도출하여 백인들도 얼마든지 그루브한 연주를 할 수 있음을 선 보여 당시 세인을 놀라케 한 보통 길어야 3분인데 Temptatiions의 곡을 상상할 수 없는 21분 30초 짜리 대곡으로 재탄생시킨 이 곡에는 피트 리베라의 고전적이고 클래식한 드럼 연주에 재즈 연주에나 있을법 한 색스폰의 간주가 정말 멋들어지게 조화를 고전 락으로 발표해 한국 락의 대부인 기타리스트 신중현씨가 당시 가장 흠모했던 그룹이라 한다. 이곡은 US Top Ten에서 인기 순위 4위를 기록했다.
