처비 체커(Chubby Checker)는 1941년 미국 태어나 고교 재학 중 지역의 한 양계장에서 병아리 감별사로 일하다가 주인의 소개로 필라델피아 소재의 카메오-파크웨이 레코드사와 계약했다. 1959년 여름 발표한 첫 싱글 The class는 비록 38위에 그치고 말았지만, 1960년대 초반 전 세계를 뜨겁게 달구었던 트위스트 열풍의 주역인 그의 곡 The twist는 1960년에 빌보드 차트 1위에 오른 후 1년 반이 지난 1962년 초 다시 차트 정상을 정복하는 스매시 히트를 기록했다. 록 역사상 1년 이상 시차를 두고 두 번 1위에 오른 곡은 이 곡 밖에 없다. 역시 트위스트 바람을 일으킨 그의 1961년 히트곡 Let's twist again 히트를 쳤다.
