신화적인 인물로 꼽는 리치 블랙모어 (Ritchie Blackmore)가 1974년도 딥 퍼플(Deep purple)에서 탈퇴하고  로니 제임스 디오(Ronnie James Dio)와 함께 음악 활동을 하기로 뜻을 합한 뒤에 그룹'엘프(Elf)의 멤버들과 함께 1975년경 'Rainbow'라는 이름의 그룹을 결성해 1975년 데뷔 앨범 'Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow'를 발표했다.
