리차드 막스(Richard Marx )는 1963년 미국 시카고 일리노이주 출생. 작곡가인 아버지, 노래하는 어머니의 영향에 의해 다섯 살 때부터 아버지의 상업광고에 등장해 17세까지 CM송을 노래했다. 싱어 송라이터 리차드 막스는 라이오넬 리치의 백 보컬로 음악 활동을 시작하여 작곡가로 활동하다가 1987년 데뷔앨범 (Richard Max)를 발표해 1988년 더블 프래티넘을 획득했으며 Should've Known Better, Don't Mean Nothing 곡을 히트시키며 롤링스톤지의 87년 최우수 신인 가수상을 수상. ‘Hold on To The Night’로 빌보드 싱글 차트 1위 수상. 1992년에는 빌보드 뮤직어워드 상을 수상했다. 영화 (데킬라 선라이즈)의 주제곡을 작곡했으며 여성 메탈그룹 빅슨·포코·에니모션 등에게 곡을 주어 능력을 인정받았다. 1989년 두 번째 앨범 (Repeat Offender)를 발표하였다. 앨범은 트리플 플래티넘을 획득했으며 1991년 세 번째 앨범(Rush Street)음악에 입문했다. 그의 멋진 발라드는 허스키하면서도 중저음의 쓸쓸한 황량함과 따뜻함마저 느껴지는 목소리 매력으로 우리나라에서 특히 차분하고 서정성 넘치는 인기로 80년 말부터 90년대 중반기까지 인기를 누린 팝 발라드의 황제라 불린다.
