토니 조 화이트(Tony Joe White)는 1943년 미국 루이지애나 출신의 싱어송라이터, 프랑스에선 "Swamp Fox" 란 닉네임으로 잘 알려진 블루 아이드 소울에서 빼 놓을 수 없는 뮤지션이다. 통상적으로 소울은 흑인들의 것이라 여겼던 적이 있었지만 라이처스 브라더스 듀오를 기점으로 백인들의 화이트 소울,즉 블루 아이드 소울이 번성하게 되었다. 토니 조 화이트는 유럽에 블루 아이드 소울의 기반을 구축하여 유럽 팬들의 열렬한 사랑을 독차지 했을 뿐만 아니라 블루지한 그의 음색과 40년 넘는 세월을 장수할 수 있었던 그의 창법은 소울에 있어서는 가히 타의 추종을 불허할 만하다.
이 노래 "Smoke from the Chimney (굴뚝에서 나오는 연기)"에는 대략 이런 뜻을 포함하고 있다. "굴뚝에서 나오는 연기 공기가 약간 차가워. 불 옆에 있는 노인네 흔들 의자에 앉아서 목화밭도 텅 비어 있고 정원도 사라지고 굴뚝에서 연기가 나고 곧 겨울이 온대요. 네가 떠나간 동안 많은 것들이 바꿔서 시간이 너무 빨리 간다. 이제 당신은 절대 집에 돌아갈 수 없어도 그 기억은 여전히 남아 있고 또 어떤 것들은 특별해 굴뚝에서 나오는 연기처럼.... 난 어제의 꿈을 꾸어요."
