조 코커는 1960년대 인기를 얻었던 영국 출신의 블루 아이드 소울 가수였다. 블루 아이드 소울은 1960년대 소울을 충실히 모방했던 백인 레코딩 아티스트들이 만든 음악이다. 조 코커는 특유의 거친 음색으로 다른 가수들의 노래를 불러 인기를 얻었다.조 코커가 리메이크해 인기를 얻은 곡은 빌리 프레스턴의 〈You Are So Beautiful〉, 레이 찰스의 〈Unchain My Heart〉, 비틀즈의 〈With A Little Help From My Friends〉 등이 있다. 1982년 영화 〈사관과 신사〉 사운드 트랙 〈Up Where We Belong〉으로 빌보드 1위를 차지했으며, 1983년 그래미상을 받았다. 2007년에는 대영제국 4등훈장을 받았다. 2014년 12월 폐암으로 사망했다.
