미드나잇 오일(Midnight Oil)은 1975년 호주의 시드니에서 결성되었다. 이들은 처음에는 록 뮤지션들과 달리 사회, 경제, 환경에 대한 강한 메시지들을 소재로 삼아 데뷔 앨범없이 자선 공연과 환경 보존 공연 등을 펼치다가 78년  데뷔 앨범 'Midnight Oil'을 발표했다. 강한 록 사운드의 멜로디가 살아있어 대중의 관심과 사랑을 얻고 이듬해 발표한 두 번째 앨범 'High InJuries'는 호주에서 골든 레코드로 세계 시장에서도 이름을 알려나갔다. '81년 세 번째 앨범 'Place Without A Postcard' 발매했다. 호주 명문대학의 법대생이었던 보컬인 Peter Garrett는 법학박사 엘리트였고, 반사회적 의식을 직설적인 가사로 환경보전, 반핵, 반전 등 인류를 파멸로 이끌 수 있는 것들에 대해 강력한 반대를 표시한 가사, 메시지로 강한 음악으로 U2와 함께 미국 팝계를 자극했었다. 88년 전세계적인 성공을 이끌어 낸 대표작 'Diesel And Dust'를 발표하고 음악의 소재로 미국 음악계의 사회 참여를 유도하는데 큰 역할을 담당했다. 89년 'Diesel And Dust'는 롤링스톤지 기자들로부터 Best Album으로 뽑히고 90년 'Blue Sky Mining'이 큰 성공을 거두는 등 이들은 90년 알라스카 오일 방류 사건의 책임을 추궁하며 거대한 석유 회사 건물 앞에서 공연을 치루고 꾸준히 환경 보전 운동을 벌이며 많은 라이브 활동과 2000년 시드니 올림픽 폐회식에 등장하여 세계 평화와 인류 공존의 메시지를 전 세계인들에게 전해주었다.
