The Snake

On her way to work one morning Down the path along side the lake
어느 날 아침 그녀는 출근하려고 호수가 길을 따라 걷고 있었지
A tender hearted woman saw a poor half frozen snake
마음 여린 아줌마는 추위에 얼어버린 가엽은 뱀을 한 마리 보았지
His pretty colored skin had been all frosted with the dew
예쁜 피부 색을 가진 뱀은 찬 이슬에 얼어 거의 죽게 되었었지
"Oh well," she cried, "I'll take you in and I'll take care of you"
"아, 이런... 널 데려다 내가 보호해 줄게"
"Take me in oh tender woman, Take me in for heaven's sake
"착한 아줌마, 저를 데려가 주세요. 제발 꼭 절 데려가 주세요
Take me in oh tender woman," sighed the snake
아줌마, 절 좀 살려 주세요" 하고 뱀은 애원했답니다.
She wrapped him up all cozy in a curvature
of silk And then laid him by the fireside
그녀는 포근한 비단에 뱀을 감싸 따뜻한 난로 가에 내려 놓고
with some honey and some milk.
꿀과 우유를 먹였습니다.
Now she hurried home from work that night as soon as she arrived
그녀는 일이 끝나자마자 서둘러 집으로 돌아왔지요
She found that pretty snake she'd taking in had been revived
그녀가 데려온 귀여운 뱀이 살아났습니다
"Take me in, oh tender woman" Take me in for heaven's sake
"아줌마, 제가 여기 있게 해주세요" 꼭 그렇게 해주세요
"Take me in oh tender woman," sighed the snake.
아줌마 절 받아 주세요" 하고 뱀은 애원했답니다.
Now she clutched him to her bosom,
그녀는 뱀을 가슴에 꼭 안아 주며,
"You're so beautiful," she cried "But if I hadn't
brought you in by now you might have died"
"얘, 넌 참 예쁘게 생겼구나" "내가 널 데려오지 않았다면 지금쯤 아마 넌 죽었겠지"
Now she stroked his pretty skin and then she kissed and held him tight.
그녀는 뱀의 피부를 쓰다듬어 주며, 키스해 주며 꼭 안았습니다.
But instead of saying thanks, that snake gave her a vicious bite.
하지만 고맙다는 말은 커녕, 그녀를 물어버렸습니다.
"Take me in, oh tender woman, Take me in, for heaven's sake.
"아줌마, 제가 여기 있게 해주세요" 꼭 그렇게 해주세요.
"Take me in oh tender woman," sighed the snake.
아줌마 절 받아 주세요" 하고 뱀은 애원했답니다.
"I saved you," cried that woman" And you've bit me even, why?
"난 널 구해 주었잖아" "그런데 물기까지 해? 못됐어" 하고 그녀는 소릴 질렀습니다.
"You know your bite is poisonous and now I'm going to die"
"네가 물면 독이 있잖아, 난 이제 죽는 거잖아"
"Oh shut up, silly woman," said the reptile with a grin.
입 다물어요, 이 바보같은 아줌마야" 앙큼한 녀석이 대꾸했습니다.
"You knew damn well I was a snake before you took me in
"아줌마도 잘 아실텐데, 날 데려오기 전에는 난 뱀이었어
"Take me in, oh tender woman" Take me in for heaven's sake.
"아줌마, 제가 여기 있게 해주세요" 꼭 그렇게 해주세요.
"Take me in oh tender woman," sighed the snake.
아줌마 절 받아 주세요" 하고 뱀은 애원했답니다.
