매리 홉킨(Mary Hopkin)는 1950영국 출신으로 TV 쇼프로그램의 노래자랑에서 최우수상을 수상하며 가수의 길로 들어섰고 1968년 비틀즈의 폴 매카트니와의 만남으로 극적인 데뷔를 하며 'Those Were the Days'로 영국 차트 석권과 함께 빌보드 차트 2위의 히트를 기록했으며, 뒤이어 존 레논과 폴 매카트니가 곡을 쓴 Goodbye로 최고 히트를 하며 시와 같은 아름다운 노랫말과 귀엽고 청아한 목소리로 포크송의 요정 이란 평과 함께 큰 인기를 누렸다. 이 노래는 러시아 민요를 편곡을 하여 세계적 히트를 시킨 노래로  매리 홉킨를 세상에 알리게 된 노래이며 국내에서도 대단한 인기를 끌었으며 꾸준히 애청되는 올드팝으로 추억을 떠올리게 하는 곡이기도 하다.
