본명이 Leonard Norman Cohen (레너드 노만 코헨)은 1934년 유태계와 폴란드 혼혈로 캐나다 몬트리얼 에서 출생하여 60년대에 나타난 가장 개성 있는 시적인 가수이다. 또한, 시인이며, 소설가이고, 작곡가이며, 영화배우고 시나리오 작가로 촉망받고 있다. 어려서 부터 클래식 음악을 좋아한 코헨은 15세부터 기타 연주와 함께 노래도 하다가 창고 극장을 무대로 활동하던 댄스 그룹 벅스킨 보이즈에 가담하여 활약 했다.
그는 어떤 사물을 정확히 꿰뚫어 보고 충분한 사유를 거친 뒤 그것을 음과 가사로 전환해서 부르고 있어 그래서 그의 노래에는 항상 강한 흡입력이 있다. 일반 가수들이 레너드 코헨의 곡을 부르더라도 절대로 맛을 낼 수 없는, 섬세하고 부드러우며 슬프고 애잔한 음을 낼 수 있는 레너드 코헨만의 독특한 분위기이다. 그의 음악을 '포에 틱 록' 즉, 시로 부르는 록'으로 분류하기도 한다. 맥길 대학과 컬럼비아 대학에서 영문학을 전공한 코헨이 쓴『Beautiful Losers』(1966)에 대학의 교재가 되었고 30만 부이상팔렸다. 상업적으로 가장 성공한 'I'm Your Man', 코헨 노래는 시를 읊조리듯이 낮고 굵은 음색이 매력적이다. 1968년초에 데뷔앨범 Songs Of Leonard Cohen 을 발표하여 'Suzanne'와 'Stranger Song', 'Hey, That's No Way To Say Goodbye'그리고 연민에 가득한 'Sisters Of Mercy'등을 히트 시켰다. 그의 음악은 너무나 매력적으로 북극의 설원처럼 싸늘하지만 한 줄기 따뜻한 '코어'와 '코드'가 있으며 그의 노랫말은 사실상 시이고 짧은 단편소설이다. 1992년에 그는 사회성이 짙은 가사를 담은 앨범 The Future를 발표하여' Be For Real'과 'Democracy'를 히트,자유와 민주화를 기리는 그의 미래에 대한 소망이 담긴 작품으로 평가 받기도 했다.
